Yesterday, August 1st, 2020, the Africanfuturistic Novel, LaGuardia written by Nnedi Okorafor was announced as the winner of the Hugo Award for best Graphic Story or Comic. This is yet another exciting milestone for the Nigerian-American fantasy and sci-fi writer who recently won the 2020 Will Eisner Comic Industry award for the same graphic book.

The “Hugo Award” is one of the most prestigious awards in the literary space aimed at laudable science fiction works and accomplishments. It was named so after Hugo Gernsback who published the first ever science fiction magazine in 1926.

This year’s award was hosted by George R. R. Martin and presented virtually by CoNZealand, the 78th World Science Fiction Convention, on The Fantasy Network due to the pandemic.

Nnedi took to Twitter to officially announce the news saying she didn’t prepare a speech because she didn’t think they’d won, and was “stunned” by the outcome.
