Voting Commences for the 2018 Alternative Nobel Prize for Literature

After much controversy surrounding the Sweden Academy last year due to sexual allegations, a New (temporary) Academy made up of Swedish writers, artists journalists, and cultural personalities who have taken it upon themselves to produce a Nobel Prize for literature this year after which it’ll be dissolved. The winners will be arrived at through a voting system. Nominees are writers who have published two works within the last 10 years, from most parts of the world.

Mission statement: “In a time when human values are increasingly being called into question,” that statement reads, “literature becomes the counterforce of oppression and a code of silence. It is now more important than ever that the world’s greatest literary prize should be awarded. “The New Academy is a non-profit organization, politically and financially independent. It consists of a wide range of knowledgeable individuals. The New Academy works within the time frame of the Swedish Academy and in five different committees.”

The winners will be announced on October 14, 2018, while the award ceremony ( $112,000!) will be on December 10, followed by the dissolution of the New Academy on December 11.

Authors nominated include:

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Haruki Murakami, Nnedi Okoroafor, J.K Rowling, and others.
