Imbubè: The African Book Festival

Imbubè is a Zulu word for lion in Southern Africa, and it was inspired as a name for the festival from a quote by Chinua Achebe:
“There is that great proverb — that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter. That did not come to me until much later. Once I realized that, I had to be a writer. I had to be that historian. It’s not one man’s job. It’s not one person’s job. But it is something we have to do, so that the story of the hunt will also reflect the agony, the travail — the bravery, even, of the lions.”
The theme for this year is: Literature as a Pillar for Africa’s Creative Economy

Activities will include: awards to writers of short stories, exhibitions, book signings, discussing of various literary activities and talks to be given by prominent members of the literary community, and the aim is to celebrate the role which literature has played in the world, to reward excellence in literature and to examine how far the literary community has come and future prospects.
