Itanile Calls for Submissions for its December Issue

We are pleased to announce that entries are now open for our second reading period. Aligning with our commitment to promote emerging and established African voices, submissions are open to all African writers.

For this issue, submissions of any theme or genre are welcome, though we are interested in works that explore the concept of journeys through the lenses of travels and tours. What does it mean to travel, to seek out new places? “No one would leave home unless home chased you to the shore,” Warsan Shire writes. What prompts us as individuals, as Africans, to undertake new journeys? We want to read your works of prose and poetry that consider, amongst many other urgent issues, travels and destinations.

All submitted works will be considered for the Itanile Annual Awards, funded by our partnership with the Collins Elesiro organisation. We encourage you to get a feel of our magazine by reading through our previous issues, beginning with Prisms.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

  • Submit 2 – 4 poems of any length, or any prose work under 5000 words.
  • Our editors seek a wide range of styles, forms, and aesthetics.
  • Simultaneous submissions are encouraged. We will verify with you that your work is still available if you are close to being chosen for publishing.
  • All works must be original and in English. In cases where non-English language (pidgin, Yoruba, and others) appear, please provide a glossary.
  • Revisions are not allowed to an entry after it has been submitted. The selected writers will be allowed to revise their manuscripts before publication.
  • Submissions open 8 August – 15 September. The longlist will be released on 30 October.
  • Submit via the submission box on the Itanile.
  • Published works stand a chance to be selected as winners under different categories of the Itanile Annual Awards.
    • Note that we have 2 reading periods in the year. The first reading period is Jan – Feb (Submission deadline – Jan 31st). Our second reading period is Aug – Sept (Submission deadline – 15 September). Each call for submission marks the beginning of our reading period and will be announced on itanile.org.
    • Submission is strictly through our website submission process. We do not accept email submissions.

By submitting, writers grant Itanile first publishing rights. Be conscious of the fact that you are writing for an online audience, so keep things short, sharp, and exciting. You retain the copyright of your work. Be advised that we will edit your work and sometimes change the title. If your work is not published simply write another.
