About Comics and Cocktails

Thanks to the media, Comic Republic is known globally for creating good quality African Superheroes. This year, Comic Republic merged pop trends and comic book culture to create the comic book reading culture of the future.

Taking the African comic book narrative to the next level requires active engagement of a growing community of comic fans in Africa.

About Comic Republic

It all started in the mind of a 6-year-old boy who would draw for weeks on anything he could find. Jide Martin could survive with just his pencils all day as he conceptualized art and drew on all his textbooks including the walls on his room! He finally went on to read Law from the University of Ife but his love for art and design saw him move on to build an image consultancy firm.

The dream to begin a company focused on comics remained a close passion of his and one morning, during a conversation with a few friends over a nice video game, Comic Republic was born.

The team saw a gap that needed to be filled. They observed that there was the lack of good quality comics and a decline in the reading culture of the average Nigerian child. The idea was to create such good quality art and intriguing stories that it will encourage people to pick up this reading habit again especially as it is related to comics and its accompanying art forms. They have now received global visibility on CNN, Forbes, Yahoo!, Quartz, Japan Times and more for the quality of their art.

Jide would recount memories he had as a child when he would model his behaviour after superheroes often asking himself “what would superman do” when he found himself in a tight situation. His dream is for Comic Republic to become that platform that instills confidence in the average youth so that they believe that they can attain their greatest dreams if only they believed in themselves. The journey towards promoting ethics, values and creativity using the Comic Republic platform began and till date the company remains focused on promoting the right values through the stories…
